How Do LEDs Work?

LEDs are now in a number of different devices, ranging from lights and bulbs to digital clocks and remote controls. Although LEDs are essential microlight bulbs that fit into circuits, they’re more energy-efficient longer lasting and don’t create as much heat. They also bring with them a number of benefits.

What Are The Advantages of LEDs?

  • Very small in size & lightweight
  • Require low voltage and current
  • Highly durable
  • Can withstand harsh weathers and very low temperatures

What makes LEDs Work?

They’re illuminated by electrons moving in a semiconductor material. LEDs are made up of small diodes and each diode is a semiconductor material. One will have an excess of electrons and the other will not have enough. This movement of electrons across the diode is what allows them to emit light. In contrast to traditional lights, LED’s convert electrical energy directly into light, not heat. This makes them more efficient and wastes less energy.

Types of LEDs

There are two types of LEDs available. LED leaded and LED chips. Each has its own use and can come also down to personal preference. For LED bulbs for your home or property LED chips to appear to be the more common type.

Indicators and illuminators

Indicators: LED’s used as indicators are in digital watches, clocks, and cars. They’re low cost and low power devices so LEDs work great in these.

Illuminators: LEDs are used in these high powered devices that provide illumination. Within these devices, LEDs provide a range of colors and brightness's.

What’s Next For LED’s

Now that LED technology has been around for a while and there have been significant developments in LED bulb technology and LED applications. The shift from LED bulbs only being directional to omnidirectional bulbs was a big leap. In terms of LED displays the use of gallium-nitride LEDs is now becoming popular and they’re brighter than LCD or OLED screen. However, so far their application has remained with smaller display screens. LEDs will also begin to be used in mobile phones as they can save the battery life of your phone and for VR headsets. These are the newest developments in where LEDs are growing!
